Early Childhood Learning Course

The Early Childhood Learning Course (ECL) was started in 1993 in the premises of the B. Ed Department of St. Xavier's College, Calcutta. It is an eight month (September to April) long diploma course based on the Montessori Method of educating young children of the age group two and a half to six years. The medium of instruction is Bengali in order to reach out to the Bengali speaking public. The course has twin objectives -

a) to remove the misconception that good education is synonymous with English medium education

b) to introduce a new element : sensitising young trainees about the needs of underprivileged children.

Since 1999 the ECL Course is being conducted at the Titli Centre in St. Xavier's School. The classes are held in the evenings. In over 200 instruction hours, the trainees are given a detailed insight into the theoretical and practical aspects of the Montessori method. Especially they are given an overview of Child Psychology and social issues pertaining to the rights of the child. So far, around 400 students have graduated from this ECL Course and have taken up occupation in diverse areas.
